The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has officially issued a policy temporarily closing hiking access to Mount Semeru. This step was taken to provide a solemn space for the Tengger community to carry out the series of Karo Festival celebrations taking place this coming August.
Based on an official announcement letter released, the closure will be effective from August 7 to 18, 2026. The decision comes in response to a request from the Ranupani Village Government, Lumajang Regency, to ensure the smooth running and sacredness of the local traditional customs.
As a consequence of this policy, hikers already on the trail are required to descend immediately and leave the Mount Semeru area no later than August 7 at 16:00 WIB. The hiking trail is scheduled to resume normal operations for the general public on August 19, 2026, through an online registration system.
For prospective hikers affected by this closure, particularly those previously hindered by the 2025 eruption, TNBTS is offering rescheduling facilities. Detailed information regarding the schedule change mechanism will be communicated directly to group leaders via their registered WhatsApp contacts.
Although climbing access to the summit of Mount Semeru is temporarily suspended, management ensures that tourism activities in the Ranu Regulo area will continue as normal. TNBTS urges all parties, including tourists and tour operators, to respect this policy for mutual convenience during the cultural celebration period.
