A massive fire that struck the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Chatuchak District, Bangkok, on Sunday night (12/7/2026), has left deep sorrow. The incident, which occurred just before midnight, resulted in the loss of 27 lives, while 63 other patrons required intensive hospital treatment, with 22 reported to be in critical condition.
Field reports indicate that panic broke out as thick smoke instantly engulfed the venue. Based on initial testimonies, a musician performing at the time saw sparks and smoke emerging from an electrical panel near the stage, followed by a power outage and the sound of an explosion. Rescue attempts were hindered as many patrons became trapped while trying to flee toward the back of the building, where numerous victims were found lying near the toilet area.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that administratively, the venue held an operating permit and had emergency exit facilities. However, police are currently investigating whether those emergency exits were actually accessible in total darkness caused by the power outage and extremely thick smoke billows.
This tragic event has drawn public attention to the safety of entertainment venues in Thailand, as it shares a similar pattern with the Santika Club tragedy in 2009 and the Mountain B Pub tragedy in 2022. In all three incidents, the origin of the fire often started near the stage area, exacerbated by flammable interior materials and evacuation system failures that have claimed hundreds of lives over the past two decades.
Authorities are still conducting an in-depth investigation to determine the official cause of the fire. The Thai government, through Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has committed to evaluating safety procedures across all nightlife venues to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.
