The Class IIA Batam Correctional Institution (Lapas) officially commenced the Inmate Sports Week (Porsenap) to welcome the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. The opening of this rehabilitation activity was marked by the release of balloons into the air by the Head of Batam Lapas, Yosafat Rizanto, at the main field of the correctional facility on Friday (31/7).
This activity is designed not only as a platform for physical competition, but also as a strategic means to strengthen the sense of togetherness among inmates from various residential blocks. Through this competition, inmates are provided with a positive space to channel their talents and interests in sports while serving their sentences.
The Head of Batam Class IIA Lapas, Yosafat Rizanto, explained that Porsenap is a crucial pillar in the character development of inmates. This program is expected to instill fundamental values such as sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility. According to him, regular exercise contributes significantly to the physical health and mental stability of the inmates.
In this year's event, six sports are being contested, including futsal, volleyball, badminton, sepak takraw, chess, and dominoes. The prison authorities ensure that the entire series of matches runs under the strict supervision of officers to guarantee security, order, and fairness during the competition.
In addition to opening the tournament, Yosafat also motivated the inmates by reminding them of the upcoming Indonesian Independence Day General Remission program for those who meet the administrative and substantive requirements. He urged all inmates to continue to obey the rules and regulations and consistently participate in all development programs to ensure their rights are fulfilled.
