In this modern era, the "sustainable" label has often become a primary marketing jargon for various consumer electronics. From the use of recycled materials and carbon neutrality claims to eco-friendly packaging, tech giants are actively promoting these features. However, a major irony still overshadows this industry: if a sophisticated device is designed to last only a few years before eventually being replaced, does it deserve to be called sustainable?

According to data from the United Nations (UN), the world generated a record 62 million metric tons of electronic waste throughout 2022. Ironically, only about 22 percent of that massive amount was officially collected and recycled. Most devices are discarded not due to physical damage, but as a result of discontinued software support, dead embedded batteries, and the lack of affordable repair options.

This condition gives rise to a phenomenon known as profit-driven waste. Manufacturers frequently trigger forced upgrade cycles to maintain revenue streams, prompting consumers to discard gadgets that are actually still functioning normally. This practice drives the massive extraction of the Earth's limited resources, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and gold.

Research from the European Environmental Bureau shows the significant impact of extending gadget lifespans. For instance, extending the lifespan of all smartphones in the European Union by just one year could reduce carbon emissions by up to 2.1 million metric tons per year. That amount is equivalent to removing nearly one million cars from the roads, proving that the best energy efficiency is to not constantly produce new goods.

Addressing these challenges, several industry pioneers are beginning to redirect their product designs. A concrete step is shown through the concept of an air purifier designed with guaranteed spare parts availability and repairability for up to 25 years. In addition to optimizing energy efficiency by consuming minimal power, this approach proves that true sustainability lies in reducing filter waste and optimizing materials right from the initial design phase.

Today, global awareness is starting to shift toward the Right to Repair movement, supported by various new regulations at the international level. Moving forward, the sustainability of technology should no longer be assessed partially from its manufacturing process alone, but from how long the product can continue to be useful and operate in the hands of consumers without needing to be replaced.
