PT PLN (Persero) is currently carrying out a strategic overhaul of steam power plant (PLTU) governance across the nation. This step was taken in response to coal supply volatility that previously triggered operational constraints, including the threat of rolling blackouts on Java Island a while ago.
Instead of relying solely on the increasingly limited and competitive availability of high-calorie coal, PLN decided to retrofit several power plant units. Through this technological modification, PLTU facilities are projected to be able to optimize combustion using low-calorie coal, which is abundantly available in national production.
This policy is not only a structural solution to the supply crisis, but is also seen as a long-term efficiency measure. By increasing fuel consumption flexibility, the state-owned enterprise aims to maintain the reliability of the national power system so that it remains stable despite facing dynamic energy market pressures.
