TikTok, as the majority shareholder of Tokopedia, has officially confirmed organizational restructuring steps that impact employee headcount. This adjustment is focused on the research and development (R&D) division as a strategic effort by the company to achieve sustainable business growth.
News regarding these layoffs (PHK) recently came into the public spotlight after being widely discussed on various social media platforms. Nonetheless, TikTok chose not to detail the number or percentage of employees affected by the internal policy.
In an official statement, a TikTok spokesperson explained that this decision was made to align organizational operations to more effectively serve the ecosystem of users, creators, and sellers on the platform. The company acknowledged that this step was a challenging decision and committed to supporting affected employees during the transition period.
Behind the restructuring steps, TikTok emphasized that it remains committed to the development of Tokopedia in Indonesia. Investments will continue to be poured in to improve user experience while strengthening the empowerment of local business actors in the national digital commerce ecosystem.
For information, TikTok officially acquired about 75 percent of Tokopedia's shares at the end of 2023 through a strategic partnership scheme with GoTo Group. The operational integration between TikTok Shop Indonesia and Tokopedia has become the company's main foundation in strengthening its position in the country's e-commerce market to date.
