PT BYD Motor Indonesia has recently completed a series of trials for its Dual Mode (DM) technology in North Sumatra, specifically along the challenging route from Medan to Berastagi. The road, filled with steep inclines and sharp bends, served as a proving ground for BYD's flagship powertrain system in facing extreme elevations.
President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, Eagle Zhao, stated that this activity is part of the company's efforts to promote the adoption of new energy vehicles outside of Java Island. The selection of North Sumatra was deemed appropriate due to its geographical characteristics, which represent the diverse terrain of Indonesia, ranging from urban traffic congestion to intercity routes that require adaptive vehicle performance.
Unlike conventional hybrid systems, BYD's DM technology applies an 'electric-first' concept, where the electric motor acts as the primary drive. The conventional engine only activates to support energy charging or when the vehicle requires additional torque on uphill climbs. This approach is claimed to achieve highly efficient fuel consumption, reaching up to 65 kilometers per liter.
During the 150-kilometer journey, the vehicle's intelligent system automatically adjusted power distribution as needed. On flat roads, the driver experienced the quiet and responsive driving sensation characteristic of electric cars. Meanwhile, when facing steep climbs toward the Berastagi highlands, the system seamlessly combined the power of the electric motor and the engine without any jerking that could disrupt passenger comfort.
BYD is now introducing the "G.A.S.S" philosophy—which stands for Gesit (Agile), Andal (Reliable), Senyap (Quiet), and Super Irit (Super Economical)—as the primary identity of their DM technology. This strategy is expected to reassure consumers in regional areas that electrification remains relevant and functional to support daily mobility as well as long-distance travel across Indonesia's diverse geographical conditions.
