Technology has become a crucial bridge for individuals with physical limitations to continue expressing themselves. In Japan, an inspiring story comes from Masatane Muto, an artist diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 27. Although this degenerative disease has gradually paralyzed his movement and communication abilities, Muto's passion for creating has never faded.
Through the use of advanced eye-tracking technology, Muto is able to operate computer devices to design graphics and create complex performance costumes. Furthermore, vocal limitations resulting from a respiratory tract surgery were overcome through artificial intelligence (AI) that reconstructs his voice based on past recordings, allowing him to communicate with audiences once again.
Not stopping at visual arts, Muto also integrates brain signals captured through electrodes with AI systems to control robotic arms on stage. He brought this innovation to the platform he founded, MOVE Fes., an event designed to showcase how technology can help people living with ALS remain creative, connected to the community, and inspiring to many.
