The ongoing military aggression in the Gaza Strip has had a widespread destructive impact, not only on civilians in general but also crippling the Palestinian sports sector. Mustafa Siyam, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Sports Media Association (PSMA), reported that 1,012 individuals, including athletes, coaches, and scouting staff, have been killed since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023.
Data published by the PSMA shows that more than 560 of them were part of the Palestinian Football Association. This massive loss reflects the depth of the humanitarian crisis hitting the sports world in the region, where individuals who should be symbols of achievement have now become the primary victims of military attacks.
In addition to the loss of life, sports support infrastructure in Gaza is reported to have been completely destroyed. Football stadiums that were once centers of athletic activity have now been forced to serve as shelters for thousands of families displaced by the continuous bombardment by Israeli forces.
This situation occurs amidst a broader escalation of the humanitarian crisis, in which approximately 90 percent of the civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has been destroyed. Furthermore, reports from the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) also highlighted increased harassment of religious sites, including raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex and restrictions on the call to prayer (adhan) at the Ibrahimi Mosque, adding to the vulnerability of social and cultural conditions for Palestinians amidst the ongoing genocide.
