The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) recorded significant progress in implementing biometric verification for new SIM card registrations. As of July 5, 2026, this face scan-based system has logged an average of 201,000 daily transactions, reflecting effective integration across mobile operators' distribution chains in Indonesia.
Cumulatively, this policy has validated approximately 4.9 million new subscribers from early January to early July 2026. Dany Suwardany, Director of Digital Ecosystem Control at Komdigi, emphasized that operator compliance has now met established standards, following previous findings of non-compliant plain text NIK (National Identification Number) usage.
The government is committed to maintaining strict supervision and periodic inspections at the retail level to ensure the consistency of this security system. This preventive measure aims to minimize cybercrime, such as identity misuse in mobile number registrations, which has long been exploited by irresponsible parties.
Although this regulation is mandatory for new users, the government still allows existing subscribers to voluntarily update their data for optimal legal protection. This initiative is fully supported by the Indonesian Cellular Telecommunication Association (ATSI), ensuring industry infrastructure aligns with the Digital Indonesia 2025–2029 development vision.
