An inspiring story comes from a housewife from East Jakarta, Intan Andriana, who has successfully turned items considered waste into a source of income. Through her personal Instagram account, Intan shares innovative ways of selling colorful plastic bottle caps converted into children's motor learning media using the Montessori method.
These items, which are often ignored and considered trash, turn out to have high economic value for both parents and educators. Intan markets these products in packages of 10 bottle caps priced at Rp5,000. The targeted marketing strategy on social media platforms has made this simple product highly popular, especially during the school crafts assignment season.
In a day, Intan can sell up to 40 packages of bottle caps. Combined with her other educational toy businesses, she manages to record a daily turnover of between Rp2 million and Rp3 million. This success proves that being observant of surrounding opportunities is the main key to building a sustainable micro-business.
Before expanding into bottle caps, Intan, who has a bachelor's degree in fisheries, had experience marketing various simple commodities such as pinecones and green beans through marketplaces. She emphasizes that aspiring entrepreneurs do not need to be stuck with the standard of luxury goods to start a business.
Intan advises her followers to continue honing their sensitivity to opportunities around them and to utilize the digital ecosystem for marketing. According to her, patience in managing operational costs and creativity in packaging products are the determining factors for small-scale businesses to still yield maximum profits.
