The governments of India and Indonesia have agreed to integrate India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) digital payment system with the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). This strategic move was announced directly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit to meet President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (7/7/2026).
The integration of this digital financial system is projected to be a major catalyst in enhancing the efficiency of economic transactions between the two countries. PM Modi emphasized that easy access to cross-border payments will have a significant impact on business actors and tourists who frequently travel between India and Indonesia.
In addition to facilitating trade, this policy is also expected to reduce transaction costs, which have so far been considered quite burdensome. By unifying payment system infrastructures, both countries aim to shorten financial bureaucratic processes, making the mobility of investors and travelers far more practical and competitive.
Furthermore, PM Modi emphasized that people-to-people ties are a key pillar in the strategic partnership between India and Indonesia. This digital initiative is seen as a concrete commitment by both nations to strengthen economic ties in the modern era, while also solidifying the foundation of ongoing cooperation in defense and technology.
