Efforts to modernize the agricultural sector in the Cu Lao Dung district, Soc Trang Province, are now showing significant progress through the application of smart technology in orchid breeding and cultivation. This project serves as a strategic solution to replace conventional cultivation methods, which have long been considered inefficient and inconsistent in maintaining crop yield quality.
An automated irrigation system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) has become the backbone for the Cu Lao Dung Orchid Cooperative. By utilizing advanced sensors, farmers can precisely monitor microclimates—such as temperature and humidity—via a smartphone application. This technology has proven capable of optimizing water and nutrient usage, while keeping plants growing optimally amidst the extreme weather frequently occurring in the downstream area.
The results of the implementation on Dendrobium varieties show impressive success rates, with a survival rate reaching 96 percent. Beyond technical efficiency, this model also offers promising economic advantages. Although it requires an initial infrastructure investment, the automated irrigation system can cut monthly operational costs by up to 30 percent through labor savings and more controlled water usage.
The success of this project is not only felt by the cooperative as an organizational entity, but it also encourages local farmers to start considering adopting similar technologies on their personal land. The integration of technological innovation and sustainable agricultural practices is expected to act as a catalyst for farmer self-reliance in Soc Trang, while strengthening the orchid commodity value chain in the broader market.
