PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore Southeast Sumatra (PHE OSES) marked a new milestone in the national upstream oil and gas industry by launching the implementation of Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) technology in the Rama Field, Southeast Sumatra Working Area. This project represents a major breakthrough as the first offshore CEOR technology application in Indonesia, aiming to re-optimize production in mature fields.

The inaugural polymer injection ceremony held in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7/2026) marked the commencement of operational activities for the technology. High-ranking officials from SKK Migas and members of the board of directors of Pertamina Group attended the event, demonstrating full support for energy sector innovations aimed at increasing the recovery factor in reservoirs that have been operating for decades.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, emphasized that this method is a strategic step to extend the productive lifespan of existing oil and gas assets. Through the polymer flooding method, a chemical solution is injected into the reservoir to improve oil sweep efficiency, allowing previously hard-to-reach reserves to be produced more optimally once again.

This innovation is viewed as a paradigm shift in maintaining national energy security. Rather than relying solely on new reserve discoveries, Pertamina is now maximizing the potential of existing assets through technical approaches backed by thorough studies, ranging from subsurface evaluations to risk management analyses alongside EOR experts from SKK Migas.

PHE OSES management targets the full benefits of this technology deployment to be maximally realized through 2030. In addition to boosting national oil lifting, the project in the Rama Field is projected to serve as a learning model and reference for the development of similar technology across various other offshore fields in the future to preserve Indonesia's energy sovereignty.
